Today was a good day of seeing famous parts of Rome. We were waiting for Chris and Jody to arrive at our apartment and discovered when they arrived later than expected that the buses travel on a limited schedule on Sundays. Lori and Jerry opted to just go to church today and rest up for our long day in Pompeii tomorrow. So off I went with Scherry, Chris and Jody.
Our first stop was the Spanish Steps. We walked up the steps and went into the church which was beautiful. There was a guy there chasing people out if they had shorts on or bare shoulders! He was very emphatic!!
Then we walked to the Trevi Fountain - did you know it was named that because 3 roads come together there. Tre Via! It is such a beautiful fountain but of course it was wall to wall people! I threw my coin in the fountain but after spending 2 weeks here this time I doubt that I will return. Other places to see.
Then we walked to the Parthenon. Really great. It is one of the largest and best preserved ancient Roman buildings in Rome. It is huge and it has the largest concrete dome without supports in the world. The artist Raphael is buried in the Pantheon along with a couple of early Italian kings. It is now used as a Catholic Church.
We ate lunch at a restaurant in the square right outside the Pantheon. It was a good lunch - pizza again. Seems it is always pizza or pasta BUT there is nothing wrong with eating pizza a couple of meals a day for days in a row!
Then we walked over to the Piazza Navona which is huge with 3 fountains. It is really beautiful. The large fountain in the middle is the Fountain of Four Rivers. An obelisk rises from the center of the fountain. There are Egyptian obelisks all over Rome.
Our last stop for the day was Piazza del Popolo. I had been here with Ginnie on the World Cruise and was very anxious to see it again. One of the twin churches was under repair and there was a large white igloo building that was a European Space display which really made the square ugly. The American Embassy and quite a few others are just off the piazza which was kind of cool to see.
We took the Metro to our bus stop and had to wait more than half an hour for the bus home. But we got home to beer and popcorn for dinner! All in all a good day.
Enjoy the pics.
