Pompeii Monday 9/2/13

Today was a very long day. And HOT!! We had ordered a cab for 6:45 and I think we were all relieved when it actually appeared. Being incommunicado is very difficult.

The cab took us to the train station where we caught a train to Naples. The train was very crowded - our 6 person cabin was full. One couple had a really cute little miniature pincher with them - in her purse! There are dogs everywhere - on the trains, buses, at the cafes.

We found our tour with no problem and off we went to Pompeii. We decided that we would have enjoyed Pompeii a lot more not on a tour. Our tour guide had a very thick Italian accent and spoke very softly. And it was HOT!!!! VERY HOT!!!! Enjoyed seeing it, but have decided if I come this way again I'm coming in January! Really didn't get as much info as I would have liked either - she may have been giving it, but hearing and understanding her was difficult.

After a lunch of pizza and the coldest diet cokes we have had in Europe, we drove to Mt. Vesuvius. We drove most of the way up the mountain, but then we were to walk up to the crater which was a mile walk! No hill for a climber who walks a couple of miles every day, right? WRONG!!!! It was straight up! I walked about 45 minutes before giving up and turning around! Scherry and Chris and Jody said I was almost there - well, close is only good in horseshoes and hand grenades!

We got back to the train station with a couple of hours to kill. Spent another Euro to go to the bathroom and then had MickeyD's for dinner - just for you Em! The train on the way back was nonstop and high speed - made it back in about half the time! Only thing wrong with high speed is that tunnels hurt your ears.

Enjoy the pics.

The roads in Pompeii all had the stepping stones for rainy weather. See the wagon wheel rut?

A temple where they sacrificed animals.

A bed in the brothel.

Looking down one of the streets.

Looking toward Mt. Vesuvius from Pompeii.

Looking toward the ocean from the hike up Mt. Vesuvius.

View of the crater - a sight I did not see - thanks for the picture Scherry.
