Passau, Germany Thursday 8/22/13

Today we arrived in Passau at about 9:45 and our tour started at 10. Our guide had a PhD in art history and was very good. The town was just what I imagine when I think of a European town. Narrow cobblestone streets and even narrower alleys.

First we went to the city hall which was a nice building on a square right on the river. She kept apologizing for the cars parked in the square - usually they are not allowed. But, in June, they had the worst flood ever and a lot of the garages were flooded so cars can park in places they are usually not allowed.

Then we went to St. Stephens - yes another St, Stephens - church. This one was really beautiful - much prettier than yesterday's church. It was still ornate but not quite so gaudy. It has the largest church organ in the world and at 12 noon we got to attend a concert which lasted 30 minutes.

After the concert we wandered the town looking for a place for lunch. Surprise, surprise - everything was in German! Finally found a place that said English menus but they were in German but we could figure them out. Actually, we had pizza!! It was very good. The diet cokes cost almost as much as the pizza!!!

Then it was back to the ship and on our way again to the next stop where we will see another abbey but at least this one is also a brewery!!

Here are some pictures of Passau.

City Hall

The flood record on the side of the city hall. At the very top of the picture you can barely make out the pencilled line fore the flood in June.

Three of the five organs in the church - they can all be played from one place.

Narrow cobblestone street coming up from the river.
